A New Life for the Little Red Schoolhouse
It was the answer to our dreams. For several years, the WCO had been looking for a building to use as its headquarters and to house ten years worth of administrative documents, instruments and music. Then it happened. The Community Bank offered to donate to the WCO the beloved, historic Little Red Schoolhouse. It was a wonderful gift to us and to the community.
This building was built in 1905 on land donated by Don Ygnacio Garcia, “the father of Wickenburg education”, after citizens passed a $1600 bond to build and equip the school. Many people who attended school here are still living in the area and we are collecting their memories, photos and documents to display in the building. Joe Garcia, Alicia Quesada and Eugene Quesada went to first grade here in the ‘20’s and Jorja Beal was in the last Schoolhouse class in 1957.
We feel strongly that the Little Red Schoolhouse has been given back to the town through the WCO, and we have plans for many musical and arts events that will benefit locals and visitors alike in our historic downtown.
